Description
The St. John Ambulance traces its origins back almost nine centuries to the city of Jerusalem. For in Jerusalem there had long been a hostel to accommodate Christian pilgrims and to care for the sick. In 1099, when the crusaders captured Jerusalem, the hostel was being run so successfully by a man named Brother Gerard, that in 1133 Pope Paschal II formally recognized Gerard and his associates as the "Order of Hospitalers." The order later gained popularity in Western Europe, including England. Although Henry VIII and Elizabeth I suppressed the Order, it was revived in 1831 as a Protestant body. It was the English who founded the St. John Ambulance in 1877 to teach first aid and home nursing to relieve pain. The group quickly spread to various parts of the Empire and in the winter of 1882-83, representatives began teaching first aid classes in Quebec City, Canada. In the one hundred years since these initial classes, the St. John Ambulance has trained millions of Canadians in the home care of invalids and in first aid. Uniformed members of the St. John Ambulance have become familiar and welcome figures at public gatherings in Canada, where they treat those suffering from accident or illness. In war and disaster, the St. John Ambulance has comforted the afflicted. Thus, the proud tradition started eleventh century Jerusalem continues today in Canada.
