Born in Beijing in 1915, Yu Zhizhen was a master of traditional Chinese realistic painting, characterized by ultra fine brushwork, razor-sharp outlines and obsessive attention to detail. An associate professor of the Central Industrial Arts Academy, she served as vice-president of the Association of Traditional Chinese Realistic Painting as well as the Association of Flower-and-Bird Painting. Yu began honing her extensive artistic talents in 1933. The exclusive venues which her paintings decorate are testament to the exquisite quality of her work: her large screen painting Lotus has hung in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing while her painting Peony has been displayed in the office of the Chinese delegation to the United Nations. A collection of Yu Zhizhen's paintings has been published by the People's Publishing House in Beijing.
