Description
The sometimes controversial -- but always masterful -- Russian-born composer Igor Fedorovich Stravinsky gained international fame for his brilliant musical compositions created for modern ballet. Every aspect of music was renewed again and again in his work. Even though rhythm was his most striking ingredient, and his novel rhythms are still widely imitated, his instrumentation and his ways of writing for voices were also distinctive and influential. Of all of his many musical accomplishments, perhaps none gained more renown than his controversial works for the ballet, The Rite of Spring, (1912). This unique production was known as a "frenzied breakthrough of twentieth-century affinities to prehistoric mankind." During the initial performances of this violent and unconventional ballet, the "genteel" and normally quite conservative audiences were provoked into full-scale riots. This, along with two of his other unique ballets, made Stravinsky's influence on all the arts enormous and established him as a leader of a new, heroic musical generation. The delightful novelty, blatant power, and masterful elegance of his works combined to win him worldwide admiration before he was thirty years of age. Throughout his life, he continued to surprise his many admirers with various transformations of his style that constantly stimulated controversy.
