Description
Franklin Roosevelt devoted his life to public service. He ran for Governor of New York in 1928, then won reelection by an impressive majority. As a result, Democrats saw him as the logical candidate for the Presidency in 1932. His eloquence, his talent for inspiring confidence, his apparent grasp of the nature of the problems that confronted the nation -- plus the impact of the Depression of 1929 -- gave him an overwhelming victory over President Hoover. His first and most urgent task was to deal with the depression; Congress and the country responded. In what remains the most affirmative session of Congress since the first, Congress passed a series of acts that sparked an economic recovery and provided emergency relief. For a period of six years, Roosevelt presided over what he called a "New Deal." Yet before his domestic policies were completed, America was faced by an even more formidable crisis -- the dual threat of Hitler's domination of Europe and Japan's domination of the Pacific. Pearl Harbor plunged the United States into the war and as a wartime President, Roosevelt displayed the same energy, determination, leadership and vision he had already demonstrated on the domestic scene. Together with Allied leadership and the wealth and ingenuity of the American people, the Allies triumphed over both Germany and Japan. Elected an unprecedented four times, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's passion for liberty and democracy made him a true successor to Jefferson and Lincoln.
