Mysterious yellow eyes glisten from the darkness of the northern woods where a Canada Lynx, the most beautiful of all America's wild felines, moves silently across the New Jersey landscape. Long tufts of thin hairs growing from the tips of his ears and a short, thick, blank-tipped tail identify this wild cat. Stealthily, he hunts among New Jersey's state tree, the Red Oak, searching for Snowshoe Hares. Like his prey, the Canada Lynx has large, snowshoe feet which allow him to glide effortlessly over snowdrifts. Although he prefers hares, he will also eat foxes, small deer and an occasional sheep or chicken. The Lynx is a solitary animal roaming through large territories which he abandons when food becomes scarce. By winter, his long, luxurious coat has turned silver gray, and the lonely Lynx enjoys a short mating period. About seventy days later, females give birth to two or three youngsters.
