Description
Mysterious yellow eyes glisten from the darkness of the northern woods where a Canada Lynx, the most beautiful of all America's wild felines, moves silently across the New Jersey landscape. Long tufts of thin hairs growing from the tips of his ears and a short, thick, blank-tipped tail identify this wild cat. Stealthily, he hunts among New Jersey's state tree, the Red Oak, searching for Snowshoe Hares. Like his prey, the Canada Lynx has large, snowshoe feet which allow him to glide effortlessly over snowdrifts. Although he prefers hares, he will also eat foxes, small deer and an occasional sheep or chicken. The Lynx is a solitary animal roaming through large territories which he abandons when food becomes scarce. By winter, his long, luxurious coat has turned silver gray, and the lonely Lynx enjoys a short mating period. About seventy days later, females give birth to two or three youngsters. Within the first two hours of life, the kittens learn to stand up and stagger weakly about the den which is in a cave or hollow tree. For part of that first year, the youngsters follow their mothers. But, by the time they are full grown, they accept the solitary existence of the adult Felis lynx canadensis. Demand for Lynx pelts is high and because these magnificent animals are easily attracted by tasty morsels of food, they fall easily into traps set by hunters. That is why the beautiful Canada Lynxes are almost extinct today.
