Description
Over eight hundred and fifty years ago, in 1128, David I of Scotland dedicated Holyrood Abbey to Christ's Rood, or Cross, because of what he believed to be a miraculous escape while hunting in that area. In the early 1500's, James IV built the official palace beside the abbey. Both the abbey and the palace were burned to the ground during the English invasion in 1543. The palace was soon restored, but the abbey remains in ruin to this day. The Palace of Holyroodhouse is best known for the plots and intrigues that were staged there during the reign of Mary Stuart, (Mary, Queen of Scots). One of the most famous is the murder of David Riccio, an Italian musician who had become Mary's closest friend. Mary's husband, Lord Darnley, became extremely jealous of the relationship between Mary and Riccio and led a group of nobles that disposed of Riccio. Today, on the floor of the audience chamber, is a brass tablet marking the place where Riccio's body was discovered. A year later, Darnley himself was found strangled at Holyroodhouse. To the great anger of many Scottish leaders, Mary acquitted and then married the Earl of Bothwell, the man who was suspected of killing Darnley. In later years, Charles II rebuilt Holyroodhouse, designing it in the French style. After the fall of the House of Stuart, in 1714, the palace remained largely unused. But during the twentieth century, the palace was again favored by British monarchs.
