Description
Jared Ingersoll was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1749. An exceptionally good student, Ingersoll graduated from Yale College at the age of 16. At the approach of the Revolutionary War, his father sent him to study law in Europe. While in Europe, young Ingersoll became a supporter of the American patriotic cause. Upon his return to America in 1778, he began practicing law in Philadelphia. The following year, Ingersoll was elected by the Pennsylvania legislature to the Continental Congress. In 1787, he won election by the state legislature as one of the deputies to the Constitutional Convention. He took little part in the debates concerning the structure of the new government, but on the day of the last meeting, he rose to support Benjamin Franklin's motion that the delegates sign the Constitution. As long as the Federalists were in power in Pennsylvania, Ingersoll held important positions. From 1811 to 1817, he was Attorney General of Pennsylvania, and he served as City Solicitor from 1798 to 1801. With the coming to power of the Democratic-Republican Party, however, Ingersoll retired to private law practice for about ten years. In 1812, he was chosen by the Federalists as their candidate for Vice President of the United States, but he was unsuccessful. He again served as Attorney General of Pennsylvania, and then held his last public office as presiding judge of the district court of Philadelphia. Because of speculation in western land, Jared Ingersoll died a poor man in 1822.
