Artist's Description
Daniel Carroll signed both the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He was born in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in 1730. When he was twelve, he was sent to school in France. He returned to America when he was eighteen, and became a wealthy landowner and merchant in Maryland. He was elected to his first public office at the age of 47, as part of a five-man advisory board to the state governor. Carroll had the pleasure of taking his state's ratification of the Articles of Confederation, providing the approval of the thirteenth state that was needed to place the Articles in effect as the national law. For the next ten years Carroll was active in governmental affairs. He was appointed as one of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention, replacing his cousin Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, who had declined the office.
