Description
Before Stalingrad, Germany ran roughshod over all of Europe. After it, German armies continued to run -- but generally back to the Fatherland. Hitler's massive6th Army, which had crushed Holland and Belgium, arrived at the fortified city of Stalingrad in August. A five-month siege followed, with Russians fighting Germans street to street, house to house. Then the brutal Russian winter began to take its toll on the Axis forces. In the end, their supply lines cut off, 94,000 surviving Germans surrendered. The rest had fallen victim to biting cold and the equally lethal bite of Russian steel.
