Dating back to the 27th century B.C., the Chinese calendar is a combination of symbolism and mathematical complexities. Twelve animals are associated with the calendar -- the rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, serpent, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. During the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. -- A.D. 220), the Chinese calendar was organized into repeating 12 year cycles, with each year designated by 1 of the 12 animals. Quiet and trustworthy. Obstinate and intimidating. Prosperous and frugal. Dogs are honest and faithful to those they love. These are the personality traits attributed to those born during the Year of the Dog. Recent years of the Dog are: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2006.

A native of Beijing, Zu Tianli developed her love of painting at an early age. Specializing in folk art at China's Central Institute of Art, she graduated in 1987 and began her career by working in the editorial department of China Photography magazine. Known for her colorful brushwork and captivating style, Zu Tianli is perhaps most famous for the spectacular design she created for China's Year of the Dragon stamp issued in January 1988.
