Description
A picture of grace and speed, the White-tailed Deer merits its reputation as a survivor against the encroachments of man and nature. Long ago, the frontier nation looked to this splendid creature for venison and buckskin. Yet, the White-tails still range most of America, seemingly undaunted by their human predators. One reason the animals have such an amazing survival rate is that they are extremely well adapted for life in the wilderness. Their coats are so well insulated, the Deer can lie on snow without melting it. This coat's tubular hairs also give the Deer buoyancy in swimming. Most important of all, the White-tailed Deer is adept at protecting himself from danger. Although the forest hums with activity, the White-tail immediately recognizes the snap of a twig which signals a predator's presence. As if fitted with springs, the Deer takes to flight, effortlessly escaping the clutches of her foe. Her fawn, less nimble than his mother, is no less capable of protecting himself. Since his body does not emit the mother's telltale musk odor, the fawn can lie motionless and escape the detection of his enemies. His white spots perfectly camouflage him against the dapple forest background. Equipped by nature to escape danger, the White-tail remains a populous American animal. In fact, wildlife experts estimate that more than eight million of the White-tailed Deer roam America today.
