Description
Rufus King devoted a span of more than forty years to his country's service. In 1784, he represented Massachusetts in the Congress of the Confederation. He introduced in Congress a resolution forbidding slavery in any new states to be formed northwest of Ohio. He took his seat at the opening of the Constitutional Convention as a delegate for Massachusetts, and took a very active part in the debates. He favored establishing a strong national government and was a spokesman for the large northern states. Although much was said about the division of interests between the large and small states, King thought the country was really divided between North and South. After the Convention, King helped forward the Constitution to the states for ratification. King then married and made his residence in New York. In 1789, he was elected to the New York state legislature and to the U.S. Senate. After re-election to the Senate in 1795 King resigned to accept an appointment as U.S. Minister to England. Upon the termination of his ambassadorship in 1803, King retired to Long Island. During his ten years of retirement from public office, King was twice the unsuccessful vice presidential candidate of the Federalist party. The legislature of New York once again elected King to the U.S. Senate in 1813. In 1825, King accepted an appointment as U.S. Minister to Great Britain. Illness forced him to be relieved of his duties and return to Long Island, where he died in 1827.
