Description
Long ago in rural England, villagers noticed tiny winged creatures fluttering through their fields bearing wings of brightest, butter-yellow. The creatures were so abundant and their color so remarkable, the local people began referring tot hem as butterflies for their vivid color called to mind freshly-churned butter. The name has stuck. Today, a myriad of jewel-like creatures of similar body form have come to be known as butterflies. History hasn't revealed the exact identity of the original, butter-yellow butterfly. From the description, it was probably Codias edusa, a species native to the British Isles. However, if the incident had occurred in America instead of in Britain, one can be sure the bright, butter-yellow creature would most certainly have been the resplendent Orange Sulphur. The sunshine-yellow Orange Sulphur lives almost everywhere in the continental United States and is an eye-catching beauty wherever it makes its home. It is also known as the Alfalfa Sulphur, for it can often be found near alfalfa, the food plant for the Orange Sulphur's caterpillar. In addition, the Orange Sulphur is nicknamed the Roadside Sulphur in some areas of America for it can often be found lazily sunning itself near a country road, gazing serenely into a roadside puddle. The Orange Sulphur is a familiar favorite butterfly, brightening country roads and open alfalfa fields with its beautiful, butter-yellow wings.
