Artist's Description

Designed by Jiro Horikoshi, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero first flew on April 1, 1939. The aircraft had been tasked to exceed the performance of the Mitsubishi A5M, and was to have a speed of 310 mph, a 3,000-foot-per-minute climate, and maneuverability and range far in excess of any previous fighter. To meet these goals, Horikoshi and his team designed an aircraft that had little armor, non-self-sealing fuel tanks and a lightly built structure. The aircraft was used by the Japanese in the attack on Pearl Harbor and later at Guadalcanal. Japanese industry was unable to replace the Zero with more modern aircraft in sufficient quantity, and as a result, it remained in production throughout the war, ending its days primarily as a Kamikaze aircraft.
