Born in Tianjin, China, Liu Jiyou (1918-1983) was inspired by his father, Liu Kuiling, a famous animal and floral painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tianjin, where he learned the finer points of traditional Chinese painting as well as Western painting—later combining these two styles in his work. His artwork "Wu Song Beating the Tiger" won the Bronze Award of the Sixth World Young Artists Competition. Well-known in China for his comic book art, Liu portrayed various themes in the genre, from revolutionary stories to traditional fables. Most famous for his dynamic depictions of animals—particularly tigers—Liu Jiyou was a Director of the Federation of Chinese Artists, and Vice-Chairman of the Beijing Detail-Stroke Human Figure Painting Research Institute.
Please note the "Fine Art America" watermark will not appear on the painting or any print reproduction.
