During the opening months of the Korean war, it became obvious to Air Force planners that the Fairchild C-119 lacked the power and performance necessary to meet massive cargo and troop transport needs. Lockheed won the right to produce prototypes for a transport capable of carrying up to 30,000 pounds of cargo, operating on short or make-shift runways and capable of making paradrops and assault landings. Mass production of the Hercules commenced in Marietta, Georgia. In service by the end of 1956, the turboprop aircraft was utilized heavily in Vietnam as a transport, airborne command post and gunship. The hefty Hercules continues to support a variety of missions and served with distinction as both a transport and gunship in the Persian Gulf War.
