Hugo Junkers was a wealthy industrialist, but was also a visionary who saw that all-metal aircraft were essential for aviation. He built the first all-metal, multi-seat transport used in airline service, the Junkers F 13, which first flew on June 25, 1919. The F 13 was an immediate success, for it was fast for the time, rugged, and adaptable for use in all climates. A low-wing monoplane, the F 13still had an open cockpit for its two pilots, but seated four passengers in relative comfort in the cabin. The F 13 was built until 1932, being produced in 60 versions. The basic design was continuously improved over time with larger engines and more advanced equipment. German firms purchased about 110 of the F 13, and the aircraft was used in at least 24 countries.
