Description
Considered by many to be the birthplace of the United States of America, the city of Philadelphia remains as rich in culture and charm as when the Quakers first settled here in the 17th century. Founded by William Penn in 1682, Philadelphia soon became a center of religious freedom -- hence its nickname, "The City of Brotherly Love." It also soon became a major hub of colonial American politics, serving as home to the Second Continental Congress that adopted the Declaration of Independence, as well as the convention that passed the Bill of Rights. In time, the city played a vital role in the American Industrial Revolution, and because of its highly developed industry was a crucial supplier for Union forces during the Civil War.
