Description
At its first session in the autumn of 1774, the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia's Carpenters' Hall in order to reclaim Colonial rights being increasingly eroded by England's repressive rules. The delegates were, for the most part, moderate men, at first striving only for an accommodation with the mother country. Their first session produced little more than petitions to the Crown. However, when their second session convened in Independence Hall close on the heels of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the groundswell for independence was gaining momentum. When Congress appointed a committee of five to draft a declaration of independence, it befell to Thomas Jefferson to write it. Sequestering himself, he "turned to neither book nor pamphlet while writing it," and composed the audacious Declaration of Independence.
Beginning with the Second Continental Congress, the Philadelphia State House (which people began to call "Independence Hall" in the 1820s) became the hotbed of Revolution. It was here during the Second Congress that Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, James Wilson and Thomas Jefferson first appeared in Congress. Planned by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley and constructed in the 1730s, it was here that Washington was given command of the Continental Army, the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Constitution was framed. Today it is the centerpiece of Independence National Historical Park.
