Artist's Description

In December 1914, the British Admiralty put forward a specification for an aircraft designed to make long patrols at sea carrying a heavy load of bombs. It asked for an airplane that had two engines, a crew of two, the ability to fly 72 mph and the capability to carry six 112 pound bombs. The famous commander Murray Sueter, then the director of the Air Department of the Admiralty, asked Handley Page to provide a "bloody paralyzer" of an airplane. And Handley Page did just that. The 0/400s equipped the newly formed Independent Force and were widely used on the Western Front, conducting bombing against German cities. On October 21 and 22, 1918, 0/400s dropped 1,650-pound bombs -- the largest available at the time -- on Kaiserslautern, Germany.
