Description
The Great Purple Hairstreak has the most brilliant, changeable color of any of America's butterflies. The regal creature's lustrous wings are a veritable rainbow of color. A beautiful iridescent blue-green color dominates the upper wings but if the light catches the butterfly at just the right angle, his wings flash a breathtaking purple hue. Near the sweeping tails which are also distinctive features of this butterfly, the Great Purple's hind wings are a jewel-like collage of iridescent blue, green and red spots. The tails on the hind wings are thin, like hairs, and probably account for the "hair" part of the Hairstreak's name. The "streak" in the butterfly's name refers to narrow bands or streaks on the underside of his wings. The Great Purple Hairstreak has a swift, darting flight and because of this, as well as his extraordinary beauty, he looks like a winged jewel as he flies across the sky. The Great Purple Hairstreak makes his home throughout much of the southern United States. In this wide area, the butterflies can be found wherever mistletoe grows on live oak trees for the Great Purple Hairstreak feeds on mistletoe as a caterpillar. But, whether he is found in California, Florida, Tennessee or any other part of his vast range, the Great Purple Hairstreak is everywhere regarded as one of nature's most beautiful creatures.
