Description

Chinese author Cao Xueqin wrote Dream of the Red Chamber in the 1700s. It is considered one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. First circulated as an incomplete manuscript of 80 chapters under the title The Story of the Stone, it was first published by Gao E and Cheng Weiyuan almost three decades after Cao's death in a 120-chapter edition titled Dream of the Red Chamber. Whether Gao and Cheng composed these additional 40 chapters themselves, and the extent to which they reflected Cao's intentions, are still debated today. The title has also been translated as Red Chamber Dream and A Dream of Red Mansions. The field of study devoted to this novel is called Redology.
