On March 17, 1924, four Douglas World Cruisers left Santa Monica, California, for Seattle, Washington -- the official starting point of their planned around-the-world flights. On April 4, they left Seattle and headed for Alaska. Although two planes were lost during the months-long expedition, the other two -- the Chicago and the New Orleans -- eventually returned to Seattle on September 28, having circumnavigated the globe. The historic journey had taken 175 days, making the Douglas World Cruiser the first plane to fly around the world and earning the Douglas Company the proud slogan "First Around the World."Please note the "Fine Art America" watermark will not appear on the painting or any print reproduction.Artwork Copyright © 2003 Wind River Studios Holdings, Inc.
