Description
At home on the golden grass of the prairies, the Bison is a species that almost vanished from the earth. Sixty million strong, the North American Bison were once the greatest spectacle of herd animals in the world. The ground rumbled and great clouds of swirling dust filled the air when these thundering monarchs stampeded across the prairies. Large, hump-backed, and sporting a dark, shaggy fur coat, the Bison provided the Indian tribes with everything from food and shelter to sled runners. As civilization pushed farther west, however, the Bison were slaughtered by the millions ..... and this great animal was brought to the brink of extinction. Indeed, by 1800, not a single Bison could be found east of the Mississippi River ..... and by 1900 an estimated fifty million of the animals had been killed, and only a few hundred remained. Conservationists of the day realized that the great American Bison was in danger of becoming extinct, and an early 20th century conservation effort saved the Bison. Two species -- the North American Bison and the European Bison -- were placed in zoos to protect the herds. Today, through continued conservation efforts, the North American Bison is protected on game reserves.
