Description
Alexander Hamilton was one of the giants of the early period of U.S. history. During the Revolutionary War, he volunteered for military duty. Because of his courageous conduct and military skill, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, and became Washington's principal and most confidential aide. After retiring from military duty, he studied law and was admitted to the New York bar in July, 1782. In the same month, the New York legislature elected him as a delegate to the Congress of the Confederation. In 1786, Hamilton was elected to the New York legislature, and that same year was sent as a delegate to the Annapolis Convention. He was then elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where he expressed a strong belief that the British government was the best model. Hamilton believed in a life-term for the President, and was a spokesman for the industrial northern states. After the Convention, Hamilton took part in writing a series of essays that were published as The Federalist, which explained and defended the Constitution. In 1789, Washington appointed Hamilton Secretary of the Treasury. In this position, Hamilton made his greatest contribution to his country ... launching a sound economic program by which the new nation paid its war debts, establishing a national bank and stimulating manufacturing industries. Hamilton left Washington's Cabinet in 1795. In 1804, Hamilton's life ended tragically in a duel with Aaron Burr.
