Description
The largest wild member of the dog family, the gray wolf Canis lupus hasa larger natural distribution than any other mammal except humans. Unfortunately, it has been eliminated from much of its original range and, in North America,is now found primarily in Alaska and Canada. An intelligent, gregarious creature admired by the American Indians, the gray wolf -- also known as the timber wolf -- resides in complex social structures unique among wild animals. It lives inpacks of up to two dozen individuals, and these packs are distinguished by a clearly defined dominance hierarchy. At the head of the pack are the lead male andfemale, called the alpha pair, who possess the exclusive right to mate and are usually the parents of the other pack members. At the bottom of the pack is the lowest ranking wolf, known as the omega, which must constantly show submission to the rest of the pack. Ranking within the pack is based largely on personality and leadership abilities, with the strongest, most dominant wolves constantly reaffirming their superior status and making sure the lower-ranking wolves know their places. A pack's territory is often comprised of one or several hundred square miles and is actively defended against rival packs. Group howling serves the dual purpose of solidifying the pack's social order while simultaneously signaling its presence to neighboring packs. Moving and hunting mostly at night, the wolf pack feeds mainly on large herbivores such as deer, moose and caribou.
